There was a man who was blind from birth. He owned a fruit stand (摊子) on a very busy street.
One day his son came to him and told him that he had read in the newspaper of a new discovery that they could operate on his eyes and allow him to see. The father and son traveled to the doctor and paid for the operation.
The doctor asked the man after the operation, "What is the first thing you want to see when I take the bandages off?"
The blind man replied, "I want to see my beautiful fruit on my stand!"
The doctor and the son took the man down to the busy street where his fruit stand was located for so many years. The doctor carefully took off the bandages so that the man could lay his eyes on the beautiful fruit. The man was so full of joy that he could finally see his life's work-taking care of his fruit.
After a few hours of enjoying his beautiful fruit stand, he looked down the street and saw there were quite a few fruit stands in both directions. He spent so much time looking at other fruit stands and he was so sad because his fruit stand was not the only one along the street!

You might think that Western students are less shy when it comes to getting on with the opposite sex, but the truth is that pupils in the UK can feel just as awkward. British are actually quite reserved (保守的) and being at university can make them feel out of their comfort zone. Everyone finds it difficult to talk to the opposite sex on campus.
However, there is a way of dealing with this shyness in Britain, and it is called "Freshers Week". "Freshers Week" is designed to help people socialize and lose their reservation. It is a one-week long party for first year students to welcome them before lectures and lessons begin.
I remember my first week at university - it was terrifying. I looked at the schedule for "Freshers Week" and was amazed at how much was planned. Every hall where students live organizes its own events to help students become friends with the people they live with. My hall was called "Goldney Hall" and the week ahead included a talent show, a comedy night, and themed parties, including one for which we had to dress up as golfers.
The first event I went to was a school kid's party at which everyone dressed up as if they were in school. This party encouraged me to talk to all the people on my floor. One boy, who lived opposite my room, was very handsome and I felt nervous speaking to him at first. But when we met at the party dressed in silly school clothes, I felt a lot more relaxed speaking to him.
It sounds strange, but dressing up seems to be how British overcome their shyness at university. My "Freshers Week" was terrifying, but I managed to forget how scared I was.
40. What does the underlined word "awkward" in the first paragraph mean?
A. confident B. unfortunate C. amazed D. uncomfortable
41. Why is there a Freshers Week before the university begins?
A. To enjoy the university life.
B. To show the talent of students.
C. To help students become friends.
D. To know the lectures and lessons better.
42. What happened in the author's first week in university?
A. She made many friends in the parties.
B. A lot of school kids came to the party.
C. There were many activities including parties.
D. She felt lucky when she met the handsome boy at the party.
43. In the author's opinion, Freshers Week is ______________.
A. strange B. good C. funny D. boring
C
When you hear of plastic surgery, what do you think of? A Hollywood star is trying to look younger than her real age? People who want to change the size of their stomachs, breasts, or other body parts because they see it done so easily on TV?
Those are what people usually think of plastic surgery, but what about the 4-year-old boy who has his chin rebuilt after a dog bit him? Or the young woman who has the birthmark on her forehead lightened with a laser?
Plastic surgery is a special type of surgery that can involve both a person's appearance and ability to function. Plastic surgeons try to improve patients' appearance by correcting physical defects (缺陷) or changing parts of the body because they are not satisfied with the way they look.
Nowadays in the U. S. more and more teens are interested in plastic surgery. Interestingly, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports a difference in the reasons teens give for having plastic surgery and the reasons adults do: Teens view plastic surgery as a way to fit in and look acceptable to friends and peers. Adults, on the other hand, frequently see plastic surgery as a way to stand out from the crowd.
According to the ASPS, more than 350, 000 people 18 years and younger had either major or minor plastic surgical procedures in 2014. The most common procedures teens choose include nose reshaping, ear surgery, acne (粉刺) and acne scar treatment, and breast reduction.
But is it a good idea for teens to have plastic surgery just to change the appearance? Plastic surgery is unlikely to change your life. Most doctors spend a lot of time interviewing teens who want plastic surgery to decide if they really need the surgery. They try to make sure that teens are doing it for the right reasons.
Almost all teens care about their bodies. Almost everyone wishes there were a thing or two that could be changed. A lot of this feeling goes away with time. Before you get plastic surgery, ask yourself if you're considering it because you want it for yourself or it's to please someone else.
44. Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from?
A. A book review. B. A film magazine.
